the continuing fashion playlist

Recapping from my original post

David Bowie – Fashion well, obviously

Right Said Fred – I’m Too Sexy the perfect early 90s supermodel song

The Kinks – A Dedicated Follower of Fashion I haven’t heard this one yet (iTunes doesn’t have it grrr) but found it via Fops and Dandies a new favourite fashion blog.

Leonard Cohen – First we take Manhattan the best cynical fashion industry song. (Actually most of them are cynical, sarcastic, or almost parodies, aren’t they?) I like the version sung by Jennifer Warne.

Joel Plaskett Emergency – Fashionable People heard this one on Jian Ghomeshi’s new CBC show Q. It has a line I love – fashionable people, doing questionable things.

Thanks to everyone who commented suggesting great songs to add.

Bryan Adams – The Only Thing That Looks Good on Me is You. Submitted by fellow Ryerson Fashion Design ’06er Eleanor. The lab back in our day had a somewhat, er …eclectic soundtrack throughout the day. Me, I played the local CBC news at 7am and then the international magazine show The Current an 8:30am. The midnight crew listened to Fitty Cent or Elton John or who knows what.

Of Montreal – Suffer for Fashion. Tiff from suggested this one and I actually really like it a lot – shuffleworthy!

RuPaul – Supermodel (You Better Work). JC Sprowls offers up this forehead slapper.

Cake – Short Skirt Long Jacket. That girl – that outfit! I love this song! Thanks Emily. Hey, didn’t Cake do a whole album called Fashion Nugget? That was the album where they covered I Will Survive.

Chicks on Speed – Fashion Rules. This fashion song seems dry and literal but I haven’t had a chance to hear the whole song yet. This song and the next one were suggested by Jen, who just found out she got into my old fashion school! Plus, she’s playing my challenge over at TFS, you can too.

Pulp – Underwear. Rounding off our playlist in progress, this song offers up this line to take us out…

If fashion is your trade, then when you’re naked, I guess you must be unemployed yeah.

What do you think, omissions, additions? Could you listen to this playlist all the way through?

  1. I love the Chicks on Speed and the Cake tracks, David Bowie is infalliable always. Didn’t know that Leonard Cohen song was about fashion!!! Good to know. Bryan Adams isn’t doing it for me and I like the following:

Duran Duran – Up on the Catwalk
Run DMC – My Adidas (
    Prince – Raspberry Beret
    Stray Cats – Fishnet Stockings
Velvet Underground – Venus in Furs
Bob Dylan – Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat

Oh and that one that goes “black coat white shoes something something cadillac…”

  2. High Fashion Queen – Gram Parsons
Where Do You Go To My Lovely – Peter Sarsdedt
    Blue Umbrella – John Prine
Pants on Fire – Buck 65
    Old Shoes – Tom Waits
Devil With the Blue Dress – Shorty Long
She’s Bought A hat Like Princess Marina – The Kinks
And my favourite, Two-Dollar Shoes by Rosie Thomas.

  3. I’ve been working my way through all songs with “fashion” in the title on iTunes, a strangely hilarious excercise but not without some hidden gems.

Thanks for all the suggestions I’ll check’em out =) and maybe we’ll get enough good songs that we can vote which ones get on the playlist or something… hey paging Jian Ghomeshi!

Bonus Link: Anil Dash collects songs about blogs.

I guess the ultimate find would be a song about fashion blogging, eh?  Or better yet – Canadian fashion.

  4. As promised, here are some additions (some silly…)

Blonde – Rip Her to Shreds
    Goldfrapp – Satin Chic
    Groove Armada – Superstylin’
Missy Elliot – Funky Fresh Dressed

    Morningwood – New York Girls
    Paolo Nutini – New Shoes

George Michael – Freedom ’90(who could forget that video with all the supermodels)
Belle & Sebastian – The Model
    Madonna – Vogue

  5. I’m shocked no one has suggested ZZ Top’s “Sharp-Dressed Man”…

Glad you liked the Of Montreal song–they’re one of my favorite bands, and Canadian to boot!

  6. Oh I just realized we forgot –

Louis Armstrong – Top Hat and Tails

Thank you everyone the playlist is getting huge!  How are we going to narrow it down to the top ten or even twenty?

  7. Whoa, I can’t believe I forgot ‘These Boots are made for walkin'”!!! And I thought of another one, Usher’s ‘Pop ya’ Collar’

Also, There’s ‘Blue Velvet’ by Bobby Vinton, ‘Black Velvet’ by Alana Myles and ‘Blue Suede Shoes’ by Elvis. We could almost make a game out of this…
