a christmas fashion illustration

a christmas themed fashion illustration

My friend Christy suggested that I should do a Christmas themed illustration.  Lately I have been trying out brushes, ink, watercolours and watercolour pencils, with more or less success.  I thought this attempt turned out pretty nice.

I wish all of you a Super Solstice, a Merry Christmas, and many happy returns!  Your friendship, readership, and support has been the greatest gift I have ever received, and I thank you.

  1. aw thanks! looks fabutastic! love the vibrant contrast in your choice of colours – looks like the front of a fashion-y christmas card. good job!

  2. Thanks everyone!

Ayomide – for a long time I tended to use the same media for illustration – art pens and coloured in photoshop. Lately I am trying to switch it up.

I start with just marker paper or photocopy paper and I do quick drafts of my figure idea until I am happy with the gesture and the pose. Then I flesh it out until I have solved the proportion, fussy details like hands, feet, and faces, and the garment. Then I put it on the light box and layer it over with different types of paper and try different pens and brushes and inks until I have something I like. At this point I will do a few drawings or more, and sometimes I will go back and draw another rough sketch and start over.

Once I have something that pleases me, I scan it into the computer, clean it up a little, and often add a bit more colour in Photoshop.

I think the most important (and challenging) part of a fashion illustration is achieving pleasing proportions and a natural gesture with a sense of attitude and expression. The type of media is less important.
