self development

Over the weekend, I had a neat opportunity to get my photo taken with a pinhole camera, and then I was shown how to develop the negative into a positive myself. This was the first time I had ever been in a darkroom. The process is surprisingly simple, and I had never realized how chemical photography is a medium with illustrative possibilities before.

The halo around my head is an accidental water stain that looks like a deliberate highlight.

Thanks to Sebastian Sussmann and Guy Paterson at Double Negative Darkroom.

  1. It’s been a long time since I set foot in a darkroom. I’m glad you enjoyed it. However, I for one, am enjoying not having stained fingers, and a renewed sense of smell (and, not smelling like developer fluid). Digital: It just smells better! 😉

  2. I’ve always been fascinated by the possibilities of a darkroom. I had a few friends in college who majored in photography and always had the most creative, interesting pictures to show for their efforts. I hope you find some time to check out this medium a bit more. I have no doubts you’d do something amazing with it.
